Gurnee Park District News

Starting up summertime!

Director's Message: Susie Kuruvilla, CPA, CPRP

Summer is my favorite season of the year! The upcoming long, holiday weekend kicks off summer! As many of you, I am eagerly waiting to get outside, enjoy the parks, take a few walks and ride my bike.

I invite you to start your summer with Go! This year, Go the Distance, our youth walking challenge will encourage the younger members of our community to stay active. Prizes will be awarded to youth walking champions at the end of the summer.

While accomplishing the walking challenge, be sure to check out your local parks. You might be closer than you think! A recent study about the Gurnee community shows:

  • 80% of the Gurnee community live within a 10-minute walk to their local park
  • 99% of the Gurnee community live within a 20-minute walk to their local park

This year, we're looking forward to renovating Westgate Park, Shaw Park and University Park. In addition, a pickleball complex will be added to O'Plaine Park. Eight individual courts will complete the complex, providing opportunities to host outdoor tournaments.

If you prefer a nature walk or bike ride, Lake County Forest Preserves include 31,000 acres of natural land, while Lake County Division of Transportation (LCDOT) is more than just roads, providing about 60 miles of bike paths and bikes lanes. Overall, Lake County has over 550 total miles of trails and bikeways connecting forest preserves and communities.

Another way to enjoy the parks is by attending summer camp. During our nine-week summer, over 1,700 children enjoy various activities. From swimming to sports, arts, crafts, and adventure there are over 25 camp options to choose from. Most importantly, children make summer memories in a safe environment with their friends.

Support for GO Gurnee, our park improvements, summer camps and more would not be possible without our Board of Commissioners and commitment to fiscal responsibility. For the 20th consecutive year, Gurnee Park District has received the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada's (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. The award represents a significant achievement by a government entity, reflecting the commitment of the governing body and staff to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting. I commend the park district team for working hard on continuing to have a balanced budget while offering quality parks and programs for our community.

As always, please feel free to call me or e-mail me with comments and suggestions.

Enjoy your summer!
