Gurnee Park District News

Should we go outside? How trails and paths in Gurnee provide the opportunity for social distancing and recreation.

Viking Park Playground is closed, but the paths and trails remain open to those practicing social distancing.

As your Park District, we believe that many parks, trails and open spaces can continue to be used in a safe manner. In doing so, we recommend that you continue to follow local, state and national ordinances.

Please use the guidelines below prior to or during your visit to one of our parks. Please remember that all shelters and playgrounds are closed. Outdoor athletic facilities are also closed, not limited to but including tennis courts, basketball courts, and pickleball courts. Please stay on the paths and open spaces when enjoying the outdoors and our local parks.

Should you have any additional questions, please be sure to reference The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website.

"We believe that many parks, trails and open spaces can continue to be used in a safe manner that allows people to enjoy the mental and physical health benefits these spaces provide. In all instances, we recommend people follow local, state and national ordinances and guidelines regarding the use of these spaces and recognize that these vary from community to community." - National Recreation and Park Association

Tips for safe social distancing when outdoors

  • Follow CDC's guidance on personal hygiene prior to heading to trails — wash hands, carry hand sanitizer.
  • Do not use trails if you have symptoms, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, etc.
  • CDC's minimum recommended social distancing is six feet from others even when walking, hiking or biking.
  • Warn other trail users of your presence and as you pass. Signal your presence with your voice, bell or horn.
  • Note that public restrooms are closed — be prepared before you leave as well as when planning your park visit.
  • Bring water or drinks — public drinking fountains should not be used if operable.
  • Bring a suitable trash bag. Leave no trash, take everything out to protect park workers.

Outdoor paths and trails to enjoy in Gurnee

14 of your park district parks provide trails and pathways for you to enjoy. Again, please be sure you're 6 feet a part from other park guests. Should the trail be crowded, we recommend selecting another location and/or coming back at another time. Your health is our top priority.

Please note that many of these parks provide other amenities. Again, all outdoor athletic courts and fields are closed. Playgrounds are closed for your safety as well.

Our full list of park trails can be found below. Which one do you plan to visit?

I'm wondering if the regular maintenance of park areas will still be done (ex. mowing open spaces, etc)

Hi Jean,
Great question! Our parks team continues regular maintenance of our parks, while practicing social distancing. Hope you continue to enjoy time outside. Thanks for reaching out.
