Learn to Swim Levels 1-7


Learn to Swim
This program helps participants progress from beginner to advanced swimming skills. Fundamental body positions, breath control, stroke drills, and age-appropriate safety skills will be taught. Basic swimming strokes including competitive and resting strokes will be emphasized to develop participants’ proficiency, stamina, and skill in each area.

Level 1 – This level focuses on the fundamentals of swimming including water independence, coordinated arm and leg movements, and proper body position. Floating with minimal support as well as kicking with support bars are practiced. Basic coordinated arm and leg movements on front and back will also be a part of this class.

Level 2 – Arm and leg movements will become more defined in this level as coordinated breathing is introduced. Swimming on the back, basic water survival skills, and an introduction to deep water will also be highlighted.

Level 3 – Increasing strength and endurance is the primary focus at this level as the participants are prepared to swim lengths of the pool. Elementary backstroke is introduced.

Level 4 – Swimming distance will be increased significantly in this level as proper turns are introduced and swimming and diving skills are further refined. Breaststroke is introduced.

Level 5 – Swimming distances of 100 yards becomes a requirement in this level as endurance and technique are further developed. Butterfly is introduced.

Level 6 – Reinforcement of previously learned skills is emphasized as swimming endurance and technique are further challenged. Front Crawl flip turns, Sidestroke and advanced safety skills are introduced in this level.

Level 7 – Lifetime fitness philosophy is used to motivate fine tuning of stroke techniques. Basic competitive swimming concepts, advanced survival skills and advanced First-Aid skills are also taught.

Junior Lifeguard

This water safety training class includes basic rescue techniques, CPR and First-Aid Skills. Participants will improve their physical condition, acquire customer service skills, and will apprentice with current lifeguards and swim instructors. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive certification as a Junior Lifeguard.


Private Swim Instruction

Private lessons are provided with a 1:1 student/instructor ratio. Lessons are given for 30 minutes and will be personally adjusted to the needs of the student. Private Swim Lessons are offered from September through May.


Semi/Private Swim Instruction

Semi-Private Swim Lessons-Swim lessons are provided according to Learn to Swim criteria with a 2:1 student/instructor ratio. Children must be 6 years or older by the first day of class.

Private Swim Lessons-Swim lessons are provided according to Learn to Swim criteria with a one to one student/instructor ratio. Children must be 6 years or older by the first day of class.


Introduction to Competitive Swimming

Participants will focus on learning proper competitive swimming strokes, turns, starts, and lap swim etiquette. Though participation in this program will increase the participants swimming ability, it does not not guarantee then a spot on the Blue Devil Swim Club or any other competitive swim team. This program is currently offered in the Spring session only from April through May.

This program is offered during the Spring Session only.


Swim Instructor Internship

Interns receive supervised, hands-on on experience while assisting with swim lessons at the Warren Township High School Pool and at Laremont Pool. This internship is beneficial for those interested in becoming lifeguards or swim instructors.
