The Gurnee Park District operates and maintains an outdoor hockey rink and three unsupervised figure skating ice rinks within the District boundaries. Weather permitting, the rinks are generally established by mid-December and maintained through mid-February.

Ice Rink & Sled Hill* Locations
- Betty Russell Community Park offers an ice skating and hockey rink, a warming shelter and restrooms. The park is located in the Pembrook area at 5300 Pinewood Road (at the corner of Pinewood and Lawson Boulevard).
- Esper Petersen Park - Ice Rink is located on the corner of Old Grand Avenue and Kilbourne Road.
- *Christine Thompson Community Park - located at the corner of Woodlawn and Belle Plaine Avenues, this park both an ice skating rink and sled hill.
All ice skating rinks are unsupervised and for recreational use.

Skateable Ice
The following criteria must be met in order to develop skateable ice including 5-7 inches of ground frost, average temperatures of 20° F or colder for five consecutive days, a minimum of five days to spray and freeze to make ice and periodic sweeping and resurfacing as needed depending on weather conditions.

A flag system is used at Betty Russell Park to alert skaters of the ice rink conditions.
