Summer has arrived! I am not sure about you, but with a cooler than usual spring, I have anticipated summer’s arrival even more than I usually do. Summer marks the opening of the aquatic center, arrival of campers, numerous picnics in the parks and a host of special events.
Summer doesn’t arrive however without a great deal of preparation, maintenance and projects that occur in our fall and winter months. Our Recreation team has been evaluating programming demands and is looking at ways to expand those in high demand. We hope to bring more information to you this fall!
For the past several months, we have been working on a master plan for Ravinia Park with a number of new and exciting features, including more parking! We plan to apply for a grant to fund part of this project and therefore we hope to start and finish the project in the next three years.
The Board approved the Fiscal Year 2013/2014 Budget at the April Board meeting. I am proud to say that the total budget of $12.4 million is a balanced budget and we have maintained a balanced budget for many years. The two main revenue sources for the park district are property taxes and fees and charges, at 49% and 46% respectively. (Further details on the budget can be found on our website).
We are always looking at ways to enhance your park experience. This year marks the second year we will be offering the “Rec Mobile” in our neighborhood parks. Our staff brings a number of different activities, crafts and equipment to your park on a scheduled weekday evening. It is a great opportunity for you to meet neighbors, foster new friendships and enjoy the many amenities in the park.
We have many programs planned this summer for your enjoyment. We are looking forward to the Hunt Club Park Aquatic Center opening the weekend of May 25th. Season passes are still available. Our “Sounds of Summer” concert series will feature some well known bands featuring country, rock, top 40 hits and more! Also, our Children’s Concert series, catering to our smallest music lovers, is scheduled for Tuesday mornings from 10:30 to 11:15am and the Farmers’ Market will return to Esper Petersen Park on Friday mornings through September. See our Special Events page for details.
As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions to further enhance our services. Please feel free to call me at 847-623-7788 or e-mail me.
Sincerely, Susie Kuruvilla, CPA, CPRP Executive Director
